Acupuncture for Migraine

Acupuncture is now recognised widely as an effective treatment for migraine and chronic tension type headache. The reason Acupuncture is so effective is that Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the person as a whole, and identifies and treats the underlying causes of headache and migraine and not just the symptoms. By identifying triggers for Migraine such as your diet and emotions, you will be empowered to make the necessary lifestyle changes, to manage your Migraine. These lifestyle changes along with Acupuncture treatment can lead to a signifigant decrease in the severity and frequency of your migraine.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are 3 main patterns which lead to Migraine and Headache:

Wind

This type of Migraine is caused by being exposed to too much wind. Wind, like cold and damp can enter our bodies, and disrupt the flow of Qi(energy) and Blood. This stagnation of Qi and Blood, is what causes us to feel pain. Wind is a Yang pathogenic factor, and is therefore more likely to invade the upper, more Yang parts of our bodies, like our heads.. Acupuncture works by dispelling wind from our bodies, and by regulating and balancing the flow of Qi and Blood in our bodies. This type of Migraine often involves pain in the neck and back also.

Liver Yang Rising

Headaches and Migraines due to “Liver Yang Rising” are often related to our emotions such as stress, anger, and frustration. A recent study in UCD reported that 84% of people with Migraine also suffer from a combination of anger, fear, worry and depression. Different emotions affect different organs in our bodies. Stress and anger, in particular, affect our Liver, and can result in “Liver Yang Rising”. Other symptoms of Liver Yang Rising include irritability, flushed face, blurred vision, and headache on the sides of our heads. Acupuncture works to Balance the Liver, and draw down the Liver Yang from the head, thus alleviating the headache. Meditation and relaxation techniques will help to reduce stress and anger, and heal the root cause of the headaches.

Deficiency of Qi ( Energy) and Blood.

This type of Migraine is different to the other types of Migraine, as it is a softer, more lingering type of pain. Overstrain and stress, make this type of headache worse, and it often occurs when you are tired. Acupuncture helps this type of Headache , by identifying the source of the deficiency and then strengthening and tonifying your Qi and energy.

There are many different reasons why a person can be deficient in Qi and Blood.

Overwork, which is common in our society, can weaken our Kidney energy, which can lead to a variety of health problems.

Poor Diets will impact our spleen and digestive system and result in reduced energy and blood production. If this is the cause of your Migraine, it will be identified and dietary guidance will be provided alongside your Acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncture is a safe, and cost-effective way to treat Migraine and Headache.
